F45 Unley & Burnside

Story

The F45 Teams at Unley & Burnside are raising money over the month of March for Renee Staska and her three beautiful children, who have recently been diagnosed with childhood dementia. Our aim is to provide support to people like Renee and local children and families affected by this rare genetic disorder.

“You’re not just a mum of three kids anymore, you are a mum of three terminally ill children now.”

Childhood dementia affects an estimated 700,000 people. Every year, around 50,000 babies are born with a condition that causes childhood dementia.

In Australia, over 2,000 children are living with childhood dementia, this disease causes a child to progressively lose skills such as the ability to write, read, talk, walk, and play. This can happen over months, years, or decades as their brains slowly deteriorate which eventually leads to the inability to keep the body functioning properly and, eventually, to keep the body alive. Childhood dementia causes around 90 deaths a year – this is a similar number to deaths from cancer in children aged 0-14.

Childhood dementia is currently overlooked both as a health and social issue. With the support from people like you, we are hoping to make a difference in the life of Renee and her three beautiful children and others in a similar situation.

    Little Heroes Foundation Incorporated

In 29 years of operation, Little Heroes Foundation has raised close to $40 million - the majority going towards purchasing lifesaving equipment at Adelaide’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital and providing daily support to families through the Little Heroes Care Program. Little Heroes is also pleased to announce a new partnership with the Childhood Dementia Initiative. There are almost 90 deaths each year from this illness, yet little is known about the 70 different variants of this condition. The Foundation is currently running the campaign ‘Raise it for Renee’, supporting a South Australian mum with all three of her children experiencing the devastating impacts of terminal childhood dementia. Little Heroes has committed $50,000 to support Renee and families like hers. In conjunction with this campaign we are also funding a PhD student in Professor Kim Hemsley's team at Flinders University to assist them with finding potential treatments and cures for childhood dementia. Our partnership with Breakthrough Mental Health Research Foundation continues to grow through our Big Talks for Little People campaign, along with a new commitment towards an Eating Disorder Facility to be built here in South Australia. For more information on our organisation, please visit https://www.littleheroesfoundation.com.au/ As Little Heroes Foundation receives no government funding, the difference that we make to the lives of seriously ill children is not possible without the continued support of people just like you. Fundraising is such an important area for all charities, and thanks to Go Fundraise, it is easy to fundraise for Little Heroes Foundation. Simply click 'Start Fundraising' and follow the prompts to set up your page and get started!
